Established suburbs, established pools
St George is an established part of Sydney. Many of the homes have been lived in for a long time, and the family pools behind them have too. These pools have often been through years of ownership, a few different attempts at maintenance and at least one change of surface.
That history is the first thing we look at. A pool that has been painted over, patched or partly retiled has layers, and the new surface is only as good as what it sits on. Before we quote, we tap the whole shell to find hollow areas, check the tiles and coping, and see what earlier work is hiding.

What older family pools usually need
Across St George, the older pools tend to fall into a handful of situations. Not every pool fits, but these come up often:
- A worn finish that has gone rough or chalky after many seasons
- Hollow render that sounds drummy when tapped. Our drummy render repair page explains the fix
- Cracks that have opened with age or ground movement. See pool crack repair
- Water loss that needs checking before anything else. Start with why is my pool losing water
It pays to diagnose before you fix. A leak or a crack under a fresh surface is a problem you pay for twice.
Homes on the Georges River and Botany Bay
Some St George homes sit on or near the Georges River or Botany Bay. Waterfront and near-water properties bring a couple of things we think about on every job.
First, the ground. Pools close to the water can sit in wetter ground, and an empty concrete pool can lift if groundwater pushes up under it. That is why we check the hydrostatic valve and the conditions before draining, and why you should not drain a pool yourself after rain. Our guide to the hydrostatic valve explains it in plain terms.
Second, exposure. Close to the water you get more wind, more moisture in the air and, in places, a bit of salt. That puts extra demand on coping, grout and fittings. We check them all while the pool is empty.
Straight talk: if the shell is sound and mostly cosmetic, we will say so. Our guide to paint vs resurfacing lays out how to decide.
Choosing a surface for a long-term family pool
Most people in established areas plan to stay put and get decades out of the pool. That points towards a surface built for the long term and a proper prep behind it.
| Option | Good fit when | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Pebble | You want a tough, long-life, textured surface | Pebble finishes |
| Quartz | You want a smoother feel for young kids and a clean colour | Quartz finishes |
| Tiles | You want the top-end look and are happy with the upkeep | Pool tiling |

What we do with a pool that has history
When we meet an older pool, we treat the surface as a record of what has happened to it. A patch tells us someone had a problem. A different colour in one corner tells us something was repaired. A line of fine cracks tells us where the pool has moved. None of that is bad news by itself, but it points us to where to look.
We then take the old surface back to sound render, repair what is found and only then apply the finish. For a pool that has been through several owners, that discipline is what makes the difference between a surface that looks good for a season and one that lasts. If you are weighing it up against a quick coat, our pool painting page is honest about when paint is reasonable.
You get the plan in writing, with the reasons, and nothing is a surprise on the day.
Suburbs we cover in St George
We work across the St George area, including Kogarah, Hurstville and Sans Souci. Each has its own mix of older family pools and waterfront blocks. The full method is on our main pool resurfacing page, and you can see all our regions on the service areas page.
Booking a St George inspection
Pool season opens in November, and the best dates go early. Whether you want to swim by November, by Christmas or later in summer, booking the inspection early gives you more choice.
Get in touch and we will arrange a time to look at the pool, the surrounds and the ground conditions. You get a written quote that explains what the pool needs and why.
