Getting to the pool is half the job
In the Eastern Suburbs, the hardest part of a pool resurface is often not the pool. It is the route to it. Blocks are tight, houses are close together and the pool may sit behind or beside the building with very little room to move.
Before we quote, we look at how equipment, materials and waste will move between the street and the pool. Depending on the property, that might be a side passage, a set of steps, a lift over a fence, or a route straight through the house. In some cases a crane is the sensible answer. We would rather work this out at the inspection than on the morning of the job.
- Side passages: how wide, and how much has to be carried by hand
- Through-house routes: floors, doorways and finishes that need protecting
- Crane or lift access: when the only practical way over or around is up
- Street and parking: where trucks and equipment can reasonably stand

Plunge pools and compact lap pools
Many pools here are not big. Plunge pools, narrow lap pools and compact courtyard pools are common, and they are built to a standard that deserves a proper job. A small surface area leaves nowhere to hide: every join, edge and tile line is in plain view from the house.
Small pools can still have problems under the surface. The same tap test, the same grind back and the same repairs apply. Our page on pool repairs covers cracks, drummy render, leaks and damaged steps.
Salt air, and a taste for tiled finishes
Close to the ocean, salt air does what it does to every coastal pool: it wears coping, fittings and grout faster than you would expect. Many Eastern Suburbs owners respond by choosing a tiled finish, which gives a crisp, premium look and a surface that cleans easily.
| Option | What you get | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Fully tiled interior | Glass mosaic or porcelain over the whole pool, the top-end look | Pool tiling |
| Tile or pebble decision | A decision guide on look, feel and upkeep | Tiled vs pebble |
| Smooth aggregate | Even colour and a smoother feel without full tiles | Quartz finishes |
Tiled pools can be repaired but need a trained eye. Grout and loose tiles are the usual weak points, and they are worth checking while the pool is empty. We will tell you honestly if a smaller job will do.
Edge detail matters: in a compact pool, coping is a big part of the look. See our coping replacement page for materials and profiles.
Neighbours, strata and shared boundaries
With homes close together, a resurface is not only your business. Noise, dust, deliveries and access can touch your neighbours, and if your property is part of a strata arrangement there may be approvals to sort out first. We cannot tell you what your strata or council requires, and we will not guess. Check with your strata manager or council before the work is scheduled.
What we can do is keep the site tidy, tell you plainly how long each stage is expected to take, and give you information you can pass on to neighbours. Our guide to how long resurfacing takes explains what affects the timeline.
What this means for the quote
Access is a real cost in the Eastern Suburbs, and it should be visible in your quote rather than buried in it. A route that needs a crane, extra labour or careful protection of the house is different from an open side gate, and the quote should say so. If a price looks low and has not mentioned access at all, ask whether anyone has actually seen the property.
Our cost guide explains what drives the price and what a complete quote should include, without guessing at figures. For a compact pool, the biggest variables are usually access, the finish and whether coping or tiles need replacing.
Suburbs we cover in the Eastern Suburbs
We work from Bondi down to Maroubra, including Vaucluse and Randwick. Each has its own mix of pool types and access challenges, from harbour-side blocks to compact backyards close to the beach. The full method is on our main pool resurfacing page.
Our service areas page shows all the regions we cover.
Booking an Eastern Suburbs inspection
Access planning takes time, so book early. Pool season opens in November, and some people want to swim by November, others by Christmas, others later in summer. An early inspection gives you the widest choice of dates and time to sort out any approvals.
Contact us and we will arrange a visit to look at the pool and, just as importantly, how to get to it.
