Baulkham Hills is an established suburb, and its pools are a mix of ages. Plenty have been in the ground a long time, and a pool that old usually needs a repair conversation before it needs a finish conversation. A new surface laid over cracks, hollow render or a slow leak won’t last, so the first job is working out what’s actually wrong.
We have 17 years on the tools. This page is about how we diagnose and repair established pools around Baulkham Hills, before any new finish goes on. For the wider area, see our Hills District page.
Start with the problem, not the finish
Homeowners often ring asking for a resurface when the real issue is one specific fault. We’d rather find it first. These are the faults we look for on established pools:
| What you notice | What it often means | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Hollow sound when tapped | Render has lifted from the shell | Drummy render repair |
| A line running across the floor or wall | A crack, surface or structural | Pool crack repair |
| Water level dropping faster than evaporation | A leak in the shell or fittings | Pool leak repair |
| Rough, flaking or stained surface | The finish itself has worn out | Pool resurfacing |
One symptom can mean different things, which is why we inspect rather than guess from a phone call.
How we approach repairs on an established pool
Sounding out the shell
With the pool empty, we tap across the surface and mark every hollow patch. Old pools often have more than one, and some only reveal themselves once the surface is stripped.
Opening up and fixing the cause
Cracks are cut out and repaired properly, not filled and painted over. Drummy render is cut back to sound material and replaced. If the cause is movement, water or age, we say so and explain what that means for the fix.

Then the finish
Only when the shell is sound do we apply the finish you’ve chosen. That order is why the surface lasts.
Straight answer: if a repair on its own would solve your problem, we’ll quote the repair. We won’t sell you a full resurface because it’s the bigger job.
Is a full resurface or a repair the right call?
If one area is damaged and the rest of the surface is sound, a targeted repair can be the sensible choice. If the damage is widespread, or the surface is worn out as well, fixing one spot only delays the rest. We’ll walk you through it on site, so you can see what we’re seeing.
The cost depends on how much repair work is involved, the finish you choose and the access to the pool. Our guide to what drives the price explains each factor, and your written quote itemises them.
Tiles, coping and the edges
On established pools the edges often age faster than the surface. Loose tiles and lifting coping let water get behind the shell. While the pool is empty, we check both, and replace what’s failing. If you’re looking at the coping, see pool coping replacement.
What to expect on the day we inspect
We start with a walk around the pool and the yard, then look closely at the surface, tiles, coping and fittings. If the pool is still full, we can tell you a fair amount from the edge, but some faults only show once it’s empty. We’ll explain what we can see, what we can’t yet and what the likely next steps are. Nothing is booked until you’ve seen the written quote and are happy with it.
Booking for the swimming season
Pool season opens in November, and people book for different dates: November, Christmas or later in summer. Repairs can add to the schedule, so an early inspection helps us plan around the date you want to be swimming. We work to your deadline, though we don’t promise an exact finish date before we’ve seen the pool.
